In “Key Players” we sit down with members of the team for a brief conversation about their work and their passions. Through these conversations, we hope that readers can learn a little more about the fun, hardworking employees that make Key so special.
Jessica Duggan has been a member of the Key Team since 2013, working behind the scenes in the New Orleans office. As the head of the accounting department, her work impacts nearly every facet of the company. We recently sat down with Jessica to ask her about her Key experience, her life outside of work, and more.
What is your role?
As the controller, I supervise the property management and development accounting departments to ensure proper internal controls and regulatory compliances are met. I also assist in creation of annual budgets, cash flow management and tax preparation.
What does a day in your shoes look like?
I always start each day with a plan but it can get chaotic quickly. We have a really tight schedule for financials to go out, but any given day you can find me managing the accounting team, communicating with lenders, bankers, and auditors, filling out mountains of paperwork, and keeping the money flowing for all of Key’s projects and properties.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to attempt Pinterest arts and crafts projects (with frequent fails) and spend time with my two amazing kids. I love to read and recently discovered podcasts – I love “How I Built This”! The occasional office happy hour with coworkers is always a relief after a long day.
What is one thing your coworkers may not know about you?
My family is originally from Honduras so I am a first-generation American. Obviously English was not my first language. I actually didn’t learn English until 6 or 7!
What is one of the most important pieces of advice you’ve received in your life?
“Tomorrow is always another day.” Whether today was a good day or bad day, you’ll have another opportunity to do it right tomorrow.
What has been your most meaningful experience with Key?
When we acquired Chelsea, Farnham, Reata, Rincon, Las Palmas, and Lakeside, the entire New Orleans and Baton Rouge offices were at the properties doing due diligence. I was the only team member back in New Orleans coordinating the financial due diligence to help make sure the acquisition went through successfully. It was a busy time for everyone, but I was really proud of the work we all did to bring six great new properties on board!
What is your favorite thing about your job?
It keeps me challenged. It never gets stale or boring. There’s always a new problem to solve or a new way I can help the team. Not to mention, my coworkers are awesome!
If you could sing a karaoke a duet with any musician, who would it be?
I would sing Amber with 311! They’re my favorite band of all time.
